I live in Wairarapa New Zealand, with my partner in life and business and multi-award-winning photographer Esther Bunning. Together we work full-time in a mix of photography and video for clients in New Zealand and overseas.
Photography is my whole life; I have had no other career path. It all started when I was 19 when I got a job with the New Zealand tourist department washing bromide prints in the black and white lab at the National Publicity Studios in 1974. Washing prints is like washing the floor in any business because you want to get a foothold!
I progressed through the lab, printing black and white, processing film, and then on to trainee photographer. When I left NPS, I was a senior photographer and started my own business.
My passion for photographing fish started when I shot a series of commercial fish profiles for the Seafood Council (now Seafood NZ)
I saw a hole in the market for high-quality seafood imagery. I photographed 75 commercial fish species over six years, producing my version of the iconic seafood poster in 1995.
More recently, I have photographed our freshwater fish and currently producing a poster that I hope to get into primary schools, linked to a website where educators can quickly build class projects.
